3rd Quarter Learning Goals
February 1, 2009 on 9:59 am | In 1 | No CommentsThese are our learning goals for this quarter. We’re still working on making the 3rd quarter Communication Arts goals kid-friendly. I’ll post those once they are available. These are also listed on our Learning Goals 3rd Quarter page.
Math
During this quarter your child will learn:
Unit 5:
*to group numbers by their characteristics, odd and even
Unit 6:
* to compare 2 diminsional and 3-dimensional shapes (circle, rectangle, rhombus, trapezoid, triangle, rectangular prism, cylinder, pyramid, and sphere)
*to decide if two objects are congruent (same size and shape) through a slide, flip, or turn
*to identify a line of symmetry in polygons
Unit 8:
*to predict the results of putting together of taking apart 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes
* to show common fractions: halves, thirds, and fourths
*to describe the position of objects (forward, back, left, right, north, south, east, and west)
Science
This quarter your child will learn:
Solar System
* Where light comes from (sun, bulbs, flames)
* Light can be transferred from the source to the reciever
* The three things it takes to make a shadow (light source, object, surface)
* The SUN is the primary source of light and food energy on Earth
* Our SUN is a star
* Our moon is only a REFLECTOR of light
* How the SUN moves across the sky during the day and night (East to West)
* How the MOON moves across the sky during the day and night (East to West)
* How the MOON pattern changes over several months
* Day AND night happen every 24 hours
* How shadows change throughout the day
* Some objects, like the SUN, are from nature and some objects, like lightbulbs, have been used to solve human problems
* How tools and technologies have been used for measurements and observations
Social Studies
This quarter your child will learn:
Martin Luther King Jr.
-the important contributions of Martin -Luther King, Jr.
-to use aids like -timelines and -diagrams.
Communities
-to describe how changes in communication (letters, -phone calls, emails…) and transportation (horses, -trains, ships, cars, buses, airplanes…) affect peoples’ -lives.
-to describe why people living in different communities -(cities, suburbs, towns, and villages) need to interact -with each other.
-to identify different regions (urban, rural, recreational, -wheat producing and business districts).
-to compare how peoples’ needs have been met in -different ways in different cultures throughout the -ages.
