- When h follows c, s, t, or w, the combination stands for a new blended sound.
- Long /o/ spelling patterns are oa, ow, old, o, and o-consonant-e.
- Words are easier to spell when each word part is spelled separately.
The Core Words
are:
- below
- saw
- something
- thought
- both
There will be a cloze-style pretest and skill pretest. You will see a parent letter come home. On Friday, Those who did not ace the pretest will have a spelling test over the words on the cloze pretest. Words missed will go in their Quickword personal spelling dictionary.

August 21, 2011 on 10:27 am | In spelling | No CommentsWe are using a new spelling curriculum written by Sitton next year, and we are going to try out a little of it at the end of this year. The concepts for this lesson are:
- Short vowel sounds are usually spelled with one vowel.
- Long vowels sounds are usually spelled with two vowels.
- Long /i/ spelling patterns are y, igh, ind, i, and i-consonant-e.
- /ou/ spelling patterns are ou and ow.
The Core Words
are:
- along
- while
- might
- next
- sound
We see how this first lesson goes. There will be a cloze-style pretest and skill pretest. You will see a parent letter come home. On Friday, we will have a dictation spelling test. Words missed will go in their Quickword personal spelling dictionary.

Supply List Adjustments

There are School Supply Lists at most stores where you buy supplies.
These are my adjustments to the standard 3rd grade supply list.
- You will need the following extra items:
- A 1” 3-ring binder – to use as for a journal
- A worn out sock – to erase the slates and store the marker
- A zip-lock bag with: 10 pennies, 5 nickels, 10 dimes, and 2 quarters
