Sitton Unit 5 Word Work

The concepts for this lesson are:

  1. vowel-r stands for a new sound like /or/ or /er/
  2. Homophones (same sound) – words with the same sound but different spellings and meanings
  3. Frequent spelling patterns for /Ü/ are ew, ue, u-consonant-e, oo, u
  4. Frequent spelling patterns for /yÜ/ are ew, ue, u-consonant-e, u
  5. Frquent spelling patterns for /k/ are c, k, ck, qu, ch

The Core Words are:

  1. world
  2. going
  3. want
  4. school
  5. important

There will be a cloze-style pretest and skill pretest.  You will see a parent letter come home with an activity involving one of this week’s spelling rules.  On Friday, Those who did not ace the pretest will have a spelling test over the words on the cloze pretest.  Words missed will go in their Quickword personal spelling dictionary.

There are activities for practicing the Core Words.

Building Communities

We have been studying maps and communities of different sizes.  We are currently learning about urban, suburban, and rural communities.  Next week we will build communities starting with rural and building to urban communities.

I think we will use this online city-building simulation game to build these communities.  You can also try them at home.
