1st Quarter

Communication Arts

During 1st quarter your child will learn:

  • Vocabulary skills:
    • recognize base words, synonyms, antonyms, context clues, glossary, dictionary skills
  • Compare and Contrast fiction and non-fiction
  • Investigate topics through questioning
  • Use DETAILS to:
    • explain the main idea, sequence events, find cause and effect, find the author’s purpose, and make inferences
  • Find information in text to complete an organizer

Math

During 1st quarter your child will learn:

  • to read, write, and compare 3-digit numbers
  • to complete a “name collection” chart
  • to tell time to the nearest 5 minutes
  • to discuss events as likely or unlikely
  • to find the next item in geometric and numeric patterns

Science – Plants Kit

During 1st quarter your child will learn:

  • what a plant needs to grow
  • the life cycle of a plant (seed germination, growth and development, reproduction, and death)
  • to describe the life cycle of a flowering plant
  • the major parts of a plant (roots, stems, flowers, and leaves) and what the parts do for the plant
  • how water and nutrients move through the system of a plant
  • how plants are alike and different from their offspring
  • how special parts of plants help them survive in their habitat

Social Studies – Maps

During 1st quarter your child will learn:

  • to read and make maps.
  • to find and identify the Mississippi and Missouri rivers.
  • to identify the states that border Missouri.
  • to use a grid system.
  • to recite the 50 states in the United -States.
