Communication Arts

During this quarter your child will learn:

  • Use different strategies to figure out unknown words
  • Locate and use information in: table of contents, title, and glossary
  • Identify fiction, poetry, and drama by how it looks on the page
  • Use details from poetry and drama to show special sounds and comparisons
  • Compare:
    • fiction and non-fiction
    • text ideas and own experiences
    • text ideas and the world
  • Write friendly letters to a specific audience and for a specific purpose
  • Read and follow two step directions to complete a task*
  • Use details from the text to:
    • explain details about setting, character traits, and problem/solution
    • make predictions
    • draw conclusions
    • compare/contrast characters and changes in problems and settings
    • identify the narrator
    • identify cause and effect
    • identify beginning, middle, and end
    • identify author’s purpose
  • Apply after-reading skills to tell the difference b/w the main idea and supporting details.

    • shorten the story to only the most important ideas (summarize)

Math

During this quarter your child will learn:

Unit 2:

  • to describe the effects of adding and subtracting whole numbers
  • to make ballpark estimates
  • to use the “turn around rule” when adding
  • to add or subtract 3 digit numbers
  • identify properties of addition

Unit 3:

  • to find the PERIMETER of polygons
  • to use personal references (HAND, PAPERCLIP) to estimate and compare objects and distances
  • to show number stories as number sentences/models

Unit 4:

  • to model multiplication number stories
  • to model number stories with objects or drawings

Science – Animal Studies Kit

During this quarter your child will learn:

  • how plants, animals and insects live with other living things or live within their habitat.
  • that different habitats supply the needs of different types of plants and animals.
  • how humans help or harm living things in Missouri.
  • how body parts and senses help animals and insects survive in their habitat.
  • what inside and outside changes cause animals and insects to behave in certain ways.
  • how to predict which plant, animal, or insect will be able to survive in a habitat based on it*s body parts or behaviors.
  • to describe some Missouri ecosystems.

Social Studies – Government

During this quarter your child will learn:

  • to identify and explain why we have city laws and ordinances (rules).
  • the responsibilities of citizenship.
  • the purpose of the Declaration of Independence.
  • the purpose of the Constitution.
  • how the National Anthem (the Star Spangled Banner) symbolizes America.
  • peaceful ways authorities solve disagreements.
  • how decisions and laws are made AND enforced by the government.
  • to identify the three branches of government and what they do.
  • to identify who is in charge of each branch of government.

Social Studies – Economics

During this quarter your child will learn:

  • to identify public goods and services and explain what they are.
  • to identify natural, capital, and human -resources (like water, money, and employees).
  • to identify opportunity costs.
  • to identify who pays taxes.
  • to explain what taxes are and what they are -used for.
