After we finished our plants unit at the beginning of the year, we reflected on one thing we learned.  We recorded and compiled these interesting facts and ideas into our second podcast for this year.   Enjoy.

08-09 Podcast episode 1 Mammoths

March 18, 2009 on 9:12 am | In Plants kit, Podcasting | 1 Comment

Marv Dahmen visited our school earlier this year.   He told us about the most unusual residents of ancient Carl Junction.  Two complete mammoth skeletons were discovered in Carl Junction just after the turn of the 20th century.  They were exibited at the Worlds Fair in St. Louis.  Afterwards they mysteriously disappeared.  Flip through these slides as you listen to Marv tell the tale.

Podcast – Virtual Spelling Bee

December 15, 2008 on 10:28 am | In Podcast, Skype, spelling | 2 Comments

Our class had a spelling bee.  The unusual thing about this spelling bee is that half the contestants weren’t in the room.  As a matter of fact they weren’t even in the state.  We had a spelling bee with Mr. Rodriguez’ class in Los Angles, CA.  We met virtually via Skype video conferencing software.  The video didn’t work and we had some technical difficulties.  However, we managed several rounds of students in one classes giving spelling words to 1 of 5  contestant in the other class.  We ran out of time, but Ruby, Sierra, and Ashyn made it to the final round in our class.  It was a great opportunity to meet third graders from half-way across the country.  We have already visited their class blog and hope to do more with them in the future.

Here is the podcast of our virtual spelling bee.  Enjoy!

Episode 4 – Earth Day Skype podcast

April 22, 2008 on 11:38 am | In Podcast, Science | 2 Comments

Carl Junction class pictureHere is our Skype conference with Mrs. Sorey’s class in Nags Head, North Carolina.  We had some technical difficulties, but it was only our first ever Skype meeting our class had ever had.  We only managed to record about half of the voice chat, and some of that was hard to hear.  We started with video, but they couldn’t see us.  In the part we didn’t record Mrs. Evanoff said she saw a school of dolphins while driving over the bridge on her way to school!  It was an exciting experience.  We didn’t record much about Earth Day but it was sure fun!

Earth Day webcast

Earthcast 2008 Web badge by Jason RobertshawSince we are testing on Earth Day, we are going to have our celebration head of time.  On Friday we are going to try having a video chat with a 3rd grade classroom in Nag’s Head, North CarolinaMrs. Sorey’s class will hopefully meet up with us virtually on Friday morning.  We will introduce ourselves, chat some about our separate locations, and discuss Earth Day.  The latter part of the chat will hopefully be recorded.

We will post the video recording here as a video podcast, but the audio will also be played during a 24-hour webcastathon on the Ed Tech Talk internet webcast channel.  A webcast is like a live radio show on the internet, it is often recorded and posted later as a podcast.

Wish us luck.
